Mexico’s drug war getting new eyes in the sky

To boost its law enforcement and military efforts in the fight against drug cartels, the Mexican government will invest $1.03 billion in advanced satellite technology through a contract with Boeing Space and Intelligence Systems.

Under the contract announced last month, Boeing will build a satellite system called MEXSAT. The system includes three satellites ─ two for mobile communications and one for conventional fixed services ─ as well as two ground sites and associated network operations systems.

Juan Carlos Leal Sosa, director of spectrum technology and social coverage for the Mexican government’s Department of Communications and Transportation (SCT), said MEXSAT is “the most important space initiative in Mexico’s history.” More >
